Joyce Oh (SOCI ’15)

November 18, 2014

Joyce is from the United States of America. She is studying at CEU thanks to the Alumni Scholarship, next|generation.

In her own words:

I graduated from the College of William & Mary in 2013, with a BA in Anthropology. In 2012 I studied at Oxford University’s Keble College.

My participation with the science community at college led to a valuable experience—helping to found a research group, Swastha Nepal, a student-led medical research group conducting demographic surveys in the mountains of Eastern Nepal. It was my first foray into an ethnographic setting, and it introduced me to my true love: anthropology.

I am a firm advocate that anthropology, as Paul Farmer said, ought to be in service of the public “to not simply do no harm, but to do good.” I sincerely believe this, and wish to pursue my academic career with this purpose in mind, first with my MA and eventually a doctoral degree.

I am extremely grateful to the alumni donors for this opportunity, and hope to repay CEU for the faith and trust already placed in me.
