Russian Alumni Launch Newest CEU Scholarship
It’s official: CEU’s Russian alumni have launched their own scholarship to support CEU students from their country. They are the university’s fourth alumni chapter to do so.
On Monday Nov. 13 more than a dozen alumni gathered in a Moscow pub for a lively reunion and the fund’s official kickoff. The event featured networking, an update from CEU's VP Serge Sych (IRES '97, LEGS '99), and a fundraising portion in which nearly every attendee contributed towards the scholarship.
Where did they get the idea in the first place? From fellow CEU alumni.
Russian chapter leaders say they were inspired by their counterparts in Belarus, Ukraine and Serbia, where local chapters sponsor their own scholarships. (They also learned some proven fundraising tactics from the Serbian alumni chapter at this year’s Alumni Leadership Forum, in Budapest.)
Since then, the Russian chapter has been busy: promoting the scholarship and raising funds at two events in St. Petersburg this fall before the Moscow kickoff.
The chapter hopes to raise $2000 per student per year. Fundraising will kick into high gear next month, with more event and an online campaign. To learn more, see the scholarship page and follow the chapter on its Facebook group.
