Alumnus Raskevičius Faces Lithuanian Parliamentary LGBT Fight

CEU alumnus Tomas Vytautas Raskevičius (LEGS ’12, Lithuania) made history last October by becoming the first openly-LGBT person with a strong human rights agenda elected to Lithuania’s parliamentNow, spearheading a partnership bill that has sparked intense debate in this deeply-conservative country, he faces a daunting struggle. 

“It’s going to be Star Wars,” he said, laughing. 

Slated for rollout in May, the legislation seeks legal recognition for same-sex families. Lithuania is currently one of only six EU countries with no such laws. 

Former Student Gerő Passes

We are saddened to report the sudden passing last week of Szandra Gerő, a former student of CEU’s Source Language Teaching Group. She was 44 years old.  

Szandra worked at the Hungarian Jewish Museum and Archives in Budapest. A polyglot who read English, Hebrew, Yiddish and German, she studied at Hebrew University and the Budapest University of Jewish Studies (OR-ZSE) as well as CEU. 

Alumna Domínguez Chairs Monterrey Law School

CEU alumna Gloria Domínguez (IBL LLM ’12, Mexico) was appointed Department Chair of the Law School at the School of Social Science and Government of the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, Puebla Campus, in October 2020. 

As Department Chair she oversees academic plans for a unit of more than 100 students. Additional duties include event organization, coaching students international Moot Court competitions, teaching courses on Law and Private International Law, among other tasks. 

Standing Strong (All Year Long): Alumni Reach $1.5 Milestone in 2020

2020 was challenging for virtually everybody, including CEU, which faced a year like no other. Yet throughout it all, CEU alumni and friends around the world joined together – and reached a formidable new milestone – in support of their alma mater.

Last year 520 alumni raised a total of $118,024 in support of CEU. By year’s end, capped by a successful matching gift challenge, all-time contributions to the CEU Alumni Campaign topped the $1.5 million mark! (See full stats below.)

Alumnus Dimitrovski Appointed Deputy Minister

CEU alumnus Zoran Dimitrovski (POLS ‘95, North Macedonia) was recently appointed Deputy Minister for Local Self-Government in North Macedonia.

Zoran has had a long and distinguished career, starting as a TV and print journalist in the late 1980s and afterward as journalist, editor and editor-in -chief of various publications and a lecturer. In early 2020 he was elected Secretary General of the Democratic Union.
