Aleksandr Shishov (POLS '18, Latvia)

October 5, 2017

Aleksandr is studying at CEU this year, thanks to the CEU Alumni Scholarship.

In his own words:

In 2016 I graduated from the University of Glasgow with a degree in Philosophy, specializing in political theory, specifically the challenges facing modern liberal multiculturalism.

Since childhood I’ve been passionate about justice and the importance of sharing one’s resources to help improve the lives of others. During my studies I volunteered for an education project for schoolchildren, plus an NGO promoting ethnic tolerance and nondiscrimination. While studying in St Petersburg I joined a student movement defending student rights and investigating attempts to censor allegedly ‘disloyal’ staff.

I chose CEU because it champions teaching, research and free thinking, which I regard as necessary for open democratic societies.

After completing my MA I plan to continue my studies by enrolling in a PhD program. I would like to thank CEU’s alumni donors for providing me with this wonderful opportunity to realize my potential and achieve a better future. Thank you!

Aleksandr has also written a piece on A Night on Ice to showcase how the CEU community celebrates the Valentine's Day.
