Alumna Sarkisova Publishes Soviet 'Kulturfilm' Book

CEU alumna Oksana Sarkisova (NATI ’98 MA, HIST ’05 PhD) recently published her book “Screening Soviet Nationalities: Kulturfilms from the Far North to Central Asia.”

The book explores how soviet filmmakers sought to create a cinematic map of the new state by portraying its land and peoples onscreen in the early decades of the Soviet Union. Learn more.

Oksana is a research fellow at the Blinken OSA Archive and also serves as director of Budapest’s Verzio International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival. She researches and teaches subjects related to visual culture, documentary cinema and ethnography, memory, representation and archive plus history of film and amateur photography, and has published extensively on Soviet documentary film history, contemporary Russian and Eastern European cinema, and amateur photography.
