Cherishing the Moment: Alumni Reconnect in Budapest

Dozens of CEU alumni stood on the university’s rooftop last Friday, bathed in sunshine. Gathered on the Kharkiv Terrace, they were there to reconnect with one another and to show solidarity with classmates who had fled Ukraine.

Nearly 50 alumni and friends attended the April 29 mini reunion. Welcoming attendees, CEU Vice President for Enrollment, Careers and Alumni Relations Serge Sych (IRES ’97, LEGS ’99, Ukraine) noted that, in times like these, community matters more than ever.

Alumna Corina Ajder Named Moldovan Labor Secretary

CEU alumna Corina Ajder (SPP ’16) was appointed Secretary of State at the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Republic of Moldova. Her portfolio will include topics including labor relations, social security, and social dialogue, among others.

It was February 25, one day after the outbreak of the war, when the first CEU alum from Ukraine arrived at the Kerepesi Residence Center. Since then, dozens more and their families followed, seeking refuge at the dorm. For more than a month now they’ve been provided rooms and daily meals. A playroom and games have been set up for children and teens. Counselling services are offered twice a week.

CEU alumna Elizabeth Warn (IRES ’01, UK) serves as Deputy Chief of Mission for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Kyiv, Ukraine. And since the onset of the war, on February 24, 2022, she and her colleagues have been struggling to mitigate a catastrophe – and assist millions of displaced persons and refugees.
