CEU Alumni in Kazakhstan Boost Alumni Campaign Ranking

Talk about a great first event! CEU alumni in Kazakhstan met for a unique first-ever reunion last month—and in the process boosted their chapter’s standing in the CEU Alumni Campaign to fifth place worldwide in terms of member participation.

Eight people pledged to the campaign during the September 22 meeting in Almaty, donating hundreds of dollars towards the CEU community.

Romanian MEP, CEU trustee Monica Macovei honored in Brussels

CEU alumna and Board of Trustees member Monica Macovei (LEGS '93) was presented The Parliament magazine’s “MEP 2012” award last month for her work on the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee. The awards ceremony was held in Brussels on Tuesday, September 25.

CEU mourns former president and rector Elkana

Yehuda Elkana, CEU’s third president and rector (1999-2009), passed away on Sunday, September 21, in Jerusalem, after a battle with cancer. He was 78 years old. An international scholar and survivor of Auschwitz, Mr. Elkana was a devoted proponent of Open Society. He will be dearly missed.

CEU Making News in Alumni Relations

International students and alumni are increasingly a fact of life for many universities around the world. While these institutions employ different approaches in regards to their international alumni, CEU has garnered increased attention for its unique model of connecting with and engaging its graduates. Four recent publications have cited CEU’s approach as an example to other institutions.

 “We’re innovative, and now that is being recognized by others,” said Serge Sych, CEU’s Director of Alumni and Corporate Relations. “This is the biggest acknowledgement you can get.”

Alumni and CEU, St. Istvan students meet for Kazakhstan sendoff

CEU alumni in Astana, Kazakhstan met with newly-accepted students of CEU and St. Istvan University for a pre-departure meeting on August 9.

A representative of the local Hungarian embassy was there to answer students’ questions about Hungary’s culture and people, and alumni presented students with a booklet of useful Hungarian phrases to learn before arriving in Budapest. Among the new students in attendance was Aizhan Smagulova, a Moscow State University alumna who has received a full scholarship to attend CEU’s Economics Department.
