Serbian alumni launch scholarship

Right now there are talented students in Serbia who would like attend CEU but cannot due to financial reasons.
 
CEU alumni in Serbia are doing something to change that.
 
This month CEU Alumni & Friends in Serbia is rolling out its brand new Serbian Alumni Scholarship, utilizing the power of community to support promising academics from that country. And you can help.
 

Record number of alumni-hosted Pre-Departure Orientations

Q: What's one of the best resources newly-accepted CEU students have? 

A: Alumni 

Case in point: This year dozens of CEU alumni groups around the world came together to welcome the next generation of students to the CEU community. 

From June to August, alumni in three continents hosted a record 25 Pre-Departure Orientations (PDOs) for new students. A total of 100 alumni participated, greeting more than 100 students preparing to leave for Budapest and begin their studies at CEU. 

CEU ECON alum appointed Deputy Chairman of Kyrgyz national bank

CEU alumnus Nurbek Jenish (ECON ’09, PhD) has recently been appointed as the Deputy Chairman of the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The 38-year-old Bishkek native has already had an impressive career in economics. After leaving CEU he taught at the American University of Central Asia since 2009. In 2012 he was tapped to head its Economics Department.

Prior to his stint at the AUCA, Nurbek worked at the Asian Development Bank and here in Budapest at the National Bank of Hungary. He has also served as a consultant to the World Bank in Washington D.C.

ECON Alumna Šmídková passes

The CEU Alumni Relations team is saddened to report the passing of alumna Kateřina Šmídková (ECON ’93), who died in April of this year. Described as a brilliant economist and expert in monetary economics, she served as Director of Economic Research at the Czech Central Bank, as well as Professor of Economics at Charles University, in Prague. She was 46 years old. 

Our sincere condolences to Kateřina's family, friends and colleagues.
