European Parliament member and CEU alumna Livia Járóka (SOCI '99) has been honored for her outstanding work within the EU legislature - for the second time.
At a June 25 awards ceremony in Brussels she was awarded The Parliament magazine's MEP Awards 2013, in the category of "Justice and Civil Liberties," for her work on Romani inclusion.
This is her second MEP award from the magazine; in 2006 she was honored for her work in the category of "Justice and Fundamental Rights."
A member of the European People's Party, Livia was the first Romani woman to be elected to the European Parliament, in 2004, and has since distinguished herself as a fighter against racism, poverty and discrimination suffered by Romani people throughout Europe.
She is also vice-chair of the parliament's Women's Rights and Gender Equality Committe, and a member of the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committe.
Livia is not the only CEU alumna to be recognized for her work as an MEP. Last year, CEU Board of Trustees member Monica Macovei (LEGS '93) was given the magazine's MEP award for her work on the parliament's Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee.
Aside from successes within the parliament, more than 170 CEU alumni are employed by various European Union institutions and agencies. Additionally, many alumni work in various consultancies think tanks within the arena of EU affairs.
Congratulations, Livia!
