CEU mourns the loss of alumnu Tamas Kubik (NATI '14), who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly this week. He graduated in June 2014 with a master's degree in Nationalism Studies.
"CEU should be proud that people like Tamas attend the university,” said friend and classmate Umashree Pancholy (MESPOM ’14). “He was a great human being beyond the academic borders. Tamas always lent a helping hand to his international friends who found themselves in middle of problems at a place which was not their country of origin. He stood by his friends and he always supported the idea of an open society, where humanity is more important than people being straight or gay, white or black.”
Kubik earned his bachelor’s degree at Sewanee: The University of the South, in the U.S. after graduating from a bilingual high school in Budapest. He worked as a writing tutor in the U.S., and taught Hungarian to migrants, and was involved in research projects on topics such as a WWII prisoners’ camp, for an exhibition in Tennessee, and on poverty and social policy case studies for a European Union-funded research project in Budapest.
Friends and colleagues from the Nationalism Studies Program said they will miss Tamas’ kindness, caring, and his heart-warming smile. The CEU community extends its deepest condolences to Tamas’ family, as well as friends both at CEU and beyond.
Grief counseling is available via the Dean of Students Office for Nationalism Studies Program students, staff, and faculty, and counseling services are available to the CEU community at all times. Contact Dean of Students Chrys Margaritidis at margaritidisc@ceu.hu or x2088, or see counseling services on the CEU website for more information.
CEU will be sending a wreath and condolences to the family.
