Diana Urge-Vorsatz Elected Vice Chair of Working Group III of IPCC

Diana Urge-Vorsatz (ENVS '92), professor in CEU’s Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy and director of the Center for Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Policy (3CSEP) has been elected vice chair of Working Group III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the the UN body tasked with assessing climate science.

Urge-Vorsatz was the top-ranking vice chair nominee from the Pan-European region, including Russia and the countries of the former Soviet Union. At the full UN plenary vote, she defeated Carlo Carraro, president emeritus of Venice University, 76 votes to 46.

Urge-Vorsatz expressed her gratitude “for the tireless support of CEU, both on the institutional and individual level.” She hopes CEU takes her new appointment as an opportunity to “solidify and further increase the visibility and recognition of climate change related research and teaching excellence at CEU globally.”

Professor Urge-Vorsatz was acknowledged for her contribution to the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that shared the Nobel Peace Prize of 2007. She was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic in the Hungarian Parliament in March 2008.
