CEU Alumna Apostol's Feminist Group Makes Impact in Moldova

CEU alumna Victoria Apostol (LEGS '14) led a group effort that resulted in a public apology by Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca for sexist remarks made during mayoral elections in June 2015. Apostol, currently a fellow at CEU’s Human Rights Initiative, led the Group of Feminist Initiatives of Moldova, which filed an official complaint against the mayor that resulted in an official ruling that compelled Chirtoaca to apologize.

Alumnus Adam Bodnar new Polish Ombudsman

CEU alumnus Adam Bodnar (LEGS ’01) was recently elected Ombudsman by a vote of the Polish Parliament.

 According to Polska Newsweek, he will serve as “the vanguard of change, warn politicians against potential risks to individual rights, and criticize when they take actions that threaten them.”

CEU Alumnus Lesay New Slovak State Finance Secretary

CEU alumnus Ivan Lesay (POLS ’06) was recently appointed State Secretary of the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic. He replaces Vazila Hudak, who became the country’s economic minister.

Ivan is former advisor to Slovak Minister of Finance Peter Kazimir, who recommended him for his current post.

Ivan also holds a PhD in Economics from the Slovak Academy of Sciences. He has published extensively on economics, and also co-initiated the establishment of the Slovak Investment Holding.

Alumnus Le Appointed Assistant Cabinet Secretary in California Governor’s Office

Alumnus Jeff Le (POLS, '07) was appointed assistant cabinet secretary in the office of California Governor Edmund G. "Jerry" Brown Jr. He will now help with the daily running of the longtime governor's administration. Le was appointed on June 5.

Alumnus Publishes Budapest's 'Best'

CEU alumnus and journalist Sebastian Garthoff (HIST ’08) recently published a German-language guidebook to the Hungarian capital. Titled “Budapest - Zeit für das Beste" (Time for the Best), the book is a collaboration between Sebastian and Hungarian photographer Daniel Kaldori.

Focusing on Budapest’s iconic sites, the book was described by Sebastian as a lighter counterpoint to the duo’s journalistic work regarding Hungarian society in the Orban era.
