POLS Alumnus Renwick Tapped for UCL Spot

Dr. Alan Renwick (POLS ’97 MA, ’98 MPhil) will begin work in September as Deputy Director of the Constitution Unit of the University College of London’s Department of Political Science.

An expert in electoral systems and reforms, Dr. Renwick described his new appointment as “a match made in heaven.”

He is currently Associate Professor (Reader) at the University of Reading, and has previously held numerous academic positions at the University of Oxford.

CEU mourns the loss of alumnu Tamas Kubik (NATI '14), who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly this week. He graduated in June 2014 with a master's degree in Nationalism Studies. 

CEU alum to head Kenya's independent electoral commission

CEU alumnus Ezra Chiloba Simiyu (DPP ’08) was named Commission Secretary and CEO of Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on January 12.

He replaces James Oswago and his deputy Wilson Shollei, who were suspended for impropriety in Kenya’s March 2013 elections.

 A specialist in electoral governance and political management, Ezra is former deputy team leader at Drivers for Accountability, a senior fellow at the Policy House and a member of the Law Society of Kenya.

Alumnus wins Mayoral seat in Slovakia

Q: Who’s that man in the hat?

A: It’s CEU alumnus Peter Bročka (LEGS ’09), and he’s just been elected Mayor of Trnava, Slovakia.

The independent candidate won election earlier this month and is slated to take office on December 12. Among other things, his DIY campaign utilized clever personal branding and a slick website, complete with a nine-point plan ‘For [a] Better Trnava.’

Alumna Bermet Tursunkulova named Kyrgyz Deputy Education Minister

CEU alumna Bermet Tursunkulova (IRES ’99) has been appointed Deputy Minister of Education and Science for the Kyrgyz Republic.

Appointed on Oct. 27, 2014 by order of Prime Minister Joomart Otorbaev, Bermet will now oversee issues related to higher education in Kyrgyzstan.
